Thursday morning brought tragedy to the entire hockey community across the world as Shakopee High School senior and hockey star Mikayla McCarvel passed away from injuries sustained in a car accident in late December. McCarvel was a 17-year-old senior at Shakopee High School in Minnesota and an avid hockey player and fanatic.

The team announced the tragedy on twitter with a hearfelt post that showed McCarvel's impact on the school, her teammates, coaches and community who got to know McCarvel over the years.

"With heavy hearts and profound sadness we share that our teammate, Mikayla McCarvel, passed away last night. Please keep her family, friends, teammates, coaches and all that knew her in your prayers."

McCarvel played in 42 games with Shakopee High School and her presence along with her love of hockey had an impact on those around her. McCarvel's passing came three weeks after a car accident where she sustained traumatic brain injuries.

Our hearts and prayers are with the McCarvel family, the Shakopee community and all those affected by the tragedy.
