Washington Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom returned in January after hip resurfacing surgery to enhance his quality of life. His hip's response this summer remains uncertain after the team missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The success rate of this surgery in hockey varies. Ed Jovanovski, a former NHL player, managed to play only 37 more games after a year-long rehabilitation.

«They dislocate your joint,» Jovanovski said. «Pull it out of your leg. Then shave the femoral head down to a certain size and cap it with titanium. Then do the same for your socket, shaving out the socket and hammering in a new socket where everything kind of joins together.»

Ryan Kesler never played again after the procedure, while Mike Sillinger underwent it for a pain-free retirement. The Undertaker, a WWE Hall of Famer, returned to work with reduced wrestling matches per year. Backstrom's career will be evaluated during training camp, and if unable to continue, the Capitals may place him on long-term injured reserve.
