On Saturday, the Philadelphia Flyers were linked to RFA Shane Pinto after the Senators were trying to negotiate a new deal. This morning things have taken a turn and it seems like Ottawa may not deal Shane Pinto at all, rather they tried to dangle Pinto as leverage for greater things.

Flyers Trade Offer:

Anthony Di Marco among other sources, confirmed that the Flyers have officially made an offer involving Shane Pinto.

"The Flyers did make an offer. It would've seen Mathieu Joseph come back (along with Pinto) as a salary dump." Anthony Di Marco said. "There has been some whispers that OTT's preference is still to sign Pinto and that they weren't as serious as one may have once thought about trading him."

Senators GM Pierre Dorion is reportedly trying to keep Shane Pinto, however, he is not the only player the Flyers are interested in. I can confirm that GM Danny Briere has called about another unnamed young player for one of the Flyers' roster players, preferably a veteran.

Trade Rumour Breakdown:

In the original offer, Danny Briere sent over may have involved Morgan Frost, who was mentioned in the trade rumours Saturday. With that deal in the Senators' hands, it does not mean the Flyers haven't negotiated other possibilities. All though an offer is on the table, it appears another one will/could be made involving a long-time Flyer.

Scott Laughton who was linked to Canada's capital back in June, seems to be a good trade piece that may still spark interest. It was actually during the Stanley Cup Final, that Sportsnet Insider Elliotte Friedman reported the Senators were «very interested» in Scott Laughton. Additionally, the following morning, David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reiterated the rumours surrounding Scott Laughton. Which ultimately quieted down, yet it appears talks have caught flame again.

This Senators deal is exactly the move Danny Briere said he would be willing to make, especially if it does involve one of Morgan Frost and/or Scott Laughton. This makes it apparent the Flyers brass wants to work on a deal, in order to take some cap off the Senators' payroll, it just has to be the right price. Currently on the table is a trade that still sees the 22-year-old RFA go to Philadelphia, and a not-so-cap-friendly contract coming the Flyers' way -- which they can take on as a rebuilding team, giving them more leverage than other teams.

"...The Flyers could have an advantage over other teams as they would be willing to also take a salary the Sens may want to dump, that other teams can't necessarily afford to take against their cap." Anthony SanFilipoo of Crossing Broad said.

Shane Pinto seems to still be the main target on Briere's radar, but in spite of Pierre Dorion trying to alter things, Briere is willing to consider other options and if a better deal comes through, expect the Flyers to take it. But not without a cap dump. Unfortunately, in order to acquire valuable draft picks without giving up star performers, Briere will have to continue getting teams out of cap strains -- which in this case is the Ottawa Senators.

Over the summer a huge deal was finalized involving the Columbus Blue Jackets, Los Angeles Kings, and Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers acquired Cal Petersen (salary dump), Sean Walker, Blue Jackets 2023 first-found pick and 2024 second-round pick (conditional), along with the Kings 2024 second-round pick. All for Ivan Provorov, Hayden Hodgson, and Kevin Connauton. Expect Danny Briere to look to make these sorts of deals over the next two seasons, in order to build a dominant prospect pool along with a Stanley Cup-contending team in the next 3-4 years.
