Despite being a competitive team, the Philadelphia Flyers were awful last season. Travis Sanheim, one of the team's stalwarts, would follow up his best year with an average one.

In light of the fact that Sanheim knows he can do better and intends to do so, he knows it is not wise to rest on his laurels.

«Provy was an unbelievable defenseman, and he logged a lot of minutes. Somebody has to take those minutes,» Sanheim said last week at Training Camp. «I want to be a guy that can step up, and kind of grab a hold of those opportunities. Obviously, that's going to be decided here in camp and into the season.»

A couple of seasons ago, he was the Flyers' most reliable defenseman. Rasmus Ristolainen played with him, but Sanheim was the more consistent player. His struggles since then have been an ominous sign he needs to keep improving.

Because of the lack of consistency, his name frequently came up in trade talks this summer, including the Torey Krug trade, which was nixed outright by Krug.

«It sucks» when Sanheim talked about the trade rumors he was involved in this past offseason, most notably being traded for Torey Krug (Amongst other players), «I didn't see anything,» Sanheim said with a laugh. «There was probably a week there were there was lots going on. I was on my phone pretty well every day It's not a position you want to be in but it's a business. I understand it, I understand where the team's at.»

Despite being part of these rumors and trade talks, Sanheim has kept a positive outlook in spite of his misgivings.

Having signed a contract for an 8-year $50 million for the team, the young defenseman is dedicated to being a leader and growing into a leader on the blue line. He has stated explicitly that he wants to lead by example.

Meanwhile, Sanheim and Tortorella's relationship continues to grow as it seems they are working together and the results are promising.

«Sanny and I are still working through some things together,» Flyers' Head Coach John Tortorella said last week at Training Camp. «I think it's going to be a lot smoother this year.»
