Camp Invite Matt Brown Impresses Flyers Management

September signals the start of rookie camps, followed by training camps. This weekend, the Philadelphia Flyers will host their annual Rookie Showcase games against the New York Rangers after starting their rookie camp this past week.

Players must make a strong impression in order to stand out because the Flyers brass will have a difficult couple of weeks to evaluate every player at camp. The typical prospects stood out right away, and individuals like Tyson Foerster continued to shine. However, there was one player who jumped out to both management and the Flyers faithful.

Matt Brown, who was invited to camp by the Flyers, is contending for an ELC. Brown, is 24 years old and already has an impressive resume, was a senior at Boston University. He was named to the Hockey East First Team All-Star roster, a Second Team All-American, and a New England All-Star last season. He played in 39 games, a career-high, which gave him the opportunity to set some personal bests in goals (16), assists (31) and points (47), as well as 11 multi-point games.

This summer GM Danny Briere let former first-round pick Jay O'Brien walk, rather than resigning him. Giving Danny Briere the ability to bring a point producer from Boston University on a PTO.

In the Flyers' first rookie game, Matt Brown did not take the PTO for granted and he was off to a fast start. He made an impression in the first 20 minutes, not afraid to shoot the puck, looking to set up plays and find the open man. A Flyers o-zone faceoff near the end of the first period resulted in a shot immediately after the draw. Brown raced to the puck and fought his way up to the blue line to find Brink. Brink then fed Denver Barkey for a tip shot in front, which deflected to Matt Brown, who slipped past the Rangers' defence.

Brown didn't stop there; early in the second period, he managed to avoid a hit and set up Desnoyers for a fantastic scoring opportunity. Due to his high IQ, he saw the Rangers defender coming at him, drew him in, but avoided contact to leave himself open to feed Desnoyers. It appeared that the play got attention, and it did not take long for Matt Brown to be promoted to the first line alongside Tyson Foerster and Elliot Desnoyers.

Matt Brown will have a good chance of signing an entry-level contract with the Flyers if he can maintain his current performance tomorrow night.
