Chuck Fletcher's Worst Trade in Final Year Before Being Fired is Evident

The Philadelphia Flyers had a disappointing trade deadline that led to the firing of their general manager, Chuck Fletcher. Despite having numerous assets to trade, the team failed to make any significant moves. The team's previous offseason was also underwhelming as they missed out on signing Johnny Gaudreau and instead acquired another defenseman, Tony DeAngelo.

The trade to acquire DeAngelo was unnecessary and has put the team in a difficult position. Rather than committing to a rebuild, the Flyers have been trying to remain competitive by adding players. This strategy has not been successful and the acquisition of DeAngelo is evidence of this. The team gave up a 2024 second-round pick, 2023 third-round pick, and 2022 fourth-round pick for the rights to sign him. They signed him for two years at $5 million AAV.

DeAngelo has not had a good season and has had problems with the new head coach, John Tortorella. Additionally, he has a history of problems. The high cost to acquire him has also limited opportunities for younger players such as Cam York, Yegor Zamula, and Ronnie Attard. DeAngelo may be useful as trade bait next season, but so far, he has only helped the team to remain in mediocrity while costing the team valuable assets. Overall, the trade for DeAngelo is the worst Flyers' trade of the past year.
