As one of the new players for the Flyers, it's always important to show your head coach, who happens to be John Tortorella, that you have what it takes to be in his system. Tortorella is a hockey teacher who demands much from his students and expects a high return, especially if they win hockey games.

This intensity from the head coach spills over into training camp as he begins his quest to galvanize his team. One player who seems to be trying to show that he's the man for the job is the new Flyers forward, Garnet Hathaway.
The 31-year-old forward, who stands at 6 feet 3 inches and weighs 207 pounds, is playing for his fourth NHL organization. Known as the shutdown player and a penalty killer, his offensive numbers are not dramatic or flattering, to say the least. However, his penalty minutes and plus-minus statistics show that he is more defensively oriented than offensively.
On the third day of training camp, Charlie O'Connor explained that he witnessed Hathaway destroy Carter Sotheran in an open-ice hit.
This kind of play is what Tortorella is looking for and will expect him to do much of the same as the season begins on October 12th. Hathaway holds a $2.375 million cap hit for the next two seasons.
