In the Flyers most recent game before the holiday break against the Red Wings, fans saw the team fall behind 5-1 in an absolutely abysmal first period in Detroit. Flyers goalie Carter Hart allowed five goals in twenty minutes, the Flyers were unable to control the puck and the defense was non-existent. However, after that first period, the Flyers came out of the locker room looking like a different team and fought, literally, to get back in the game.

In recent years, if the Flyers had been down 5-1 after one period, most teams would have packed it in and called it a night. Quite frankly most teams in the NHL would do that. But head coach John Tortorella was able to keep his guys locked in and focused against the Red Wings.
The second period started with Nick Seeler dropping gloves with Christian Fischer which gave the team a spark and they never looked back. The Flyers went on to rattle off five straight goals to force overtime.
In overtime it was a gridlock defensively as Carter Hart was able to respond and settle in after a shaky first period. Hart made some incredible saves in the overtime period to keep Detroit at bay.
However, in the shootout Patrick Kane was able to seal the victory for the Red Wings as the Flyers left Detroit with a point. Despite the loss, Flyers analysts and fans were extremely encouraged with the fight they saw from this team.
The way the team battled back showed that they are a competitive bunch and are really buying into what coach Tortorella is doing.
