Breaking news struck the Philadelphia Flyers and their fans on Wednesday afternoon as it was reported that backup goalie Cal Petersen was placed on waivers by the Flyers. After giving up seven goals in a loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday, it appears that Danny Briere and the Flyers front office are set to explore different options regarding the number two goalie spot as the Flyers are in the thick of a playoff push.

The news was first reported by prominent NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, as many reporters expected the news to come soon after Petersen's gear was already packed up and ready to go in the locker room after Tuesday night's win against the Lightning.
In just four starts with the Flyers this season, Petersen finished with a record of 2-2, giving up 18 goals with a .864 save percentage and a 3.90 GAA. After a brutal start on Sunday where Petersen gave up seven goals, the Flyers are looking to go in a different direction as they continue to feel the effects of the Carter Hart investigation.
Although nothing has been released on what's next for the Flyers regarding the backup position, two possibilities remain imminent. One possibility is calling up Felix Sandstrom from Lehigh Valley, who has amassed a winning record this season with the Phantoms and started 20 games last season for the Flyers.
The second possibility is that the Flyers and Danny Briere make a trade at the deadline for a backup goalie. There have been rumors floating around that 22-year-old goaltender and 2021 third round pick Alexei Kolosov could potentially join the Flyers later this season after a dominant season in the KHL that saw him record 22 wins, four shutouts, and a .907 save percentage on the year.
With Petersen out of the picture, what is next for the Flyers backup goalie position?
