BREAKING: Major coaching change rocks the NHL

Friday morning has been a busy morning in the NHL as All-Star festivities have kicked off in Toronto and trades have been made across the league. Most recently, a coaching change has been made in the Western Conference that has sent shockwaves across the NHL and the hockey community.

On Friday morning, the Los Angeles Kings and General Manager Rob Blake announced that the team has let go of head coach Todd McLellan and have named Jim Hiller as the interim head coach for the remainder of the 2024 season.

This is somewhat of a surprising move being that the Kings still sit in fourth place in the Pacific Division with a record of 23-15-10 with 56 points, just three points behind Edmonton and very much in play for a Wild Card spot.

The Kings have been on a downward path the last month as they have lost 14 of their past 17 games, resulting in McLellan being dismissed from the city of angels. General manager Rob Blake issued a statement regarding the firing, thanking McLellan for his time with the Kings.

«We want to thank Todd for his hard work and dedication to the organization. He has done a tremendous job in moving us forward and making a positive impact on our group and in our community. This was not an easy decision, but we felt the change was necessary at this time."

One interesting statistic to note is that only five coaches who were head coaches in 2019, remain in the same position as they were five seasons ago.
