Breaking: Former First-Round Pick Traded in Late Night Deal

The Colorado Avalanche have acquired former first-round pick Ryan Merkley and Matt Nieto from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for young forward Martin Kaut and veteran defenseman Jacob MacDonald.

This trade is as even as it gets. The Avalanche receiving the familiar face of Matt Nieto will boost their bottom six depth. Ryan Merkley requested a trade out of San Jose a few weeks ago and was in desperate need of a fresh start. It isn't clear if Merkley will join the Avalanche or report to the AHL, but he will almost certainly be in the league when the rosters expand for the playoffs.




The Sharks are near the cellar in the standings so acquiring Martin Kaut only adds to their young forward pool. Kaut has 3 points in 27 games this year with the Avalanche, but had 8 points in 10 games with the AHL affiliate Colorado Eagles. Who do you think won this trade?
