When former general manager Chuck Fletcher made the trade for Ryan Ellis, the beleaguered defenseman that came from the Nashville Predators and sustained a back injury that shut down his season and potentially his career, there was a collective groan from the Flyers fanbase as he was only able to play four games for the Flyers.

According to capfriendly.com, Ellis' contract holds a $6.25 million cap hit and will be another four seasons. Fortunately for the Flyers, he qualifies as a long-term injury reserve and that cap hit will not apply.

Jamey Baskow, a writer for flyersnittygritty.com, made a plea on Twitter for the Flyers to break themselves free of Ryan Ellis and find a way to move him along.

In this age of the new NHL, organizations are allowed to make trades with others that can bankroll cap space. It's possible because well over half the teams in the NHL do not have the room to make any trades whatsoever.

It's also common practice now that teams will move contracts to two other teams that are looking for either cap relief or simply wanting to get rid of a contract.

Ellis' contract would be a candidate for this and it'll be interesting whether general manager Danny Briere and president Keith Jones we'll find a way to move his contract to another team looking for cap relief.
