In order for the Penguins to make the playoffs, they just needed both the Detroit Red Wings and the Washington Capitals to gain 1 point or less in the standings for their final games. However, the Penguins still had hope until the Flyers pulled their goalie with a little over 3 minutes remaining in the game and the Washington Capitals scored an empty net goal, which was the game winner. If the Flyers would have won in overtime or a shootout, the Penguins would have had chance if the Red Wings lost. Now, this would have been a moot point as the Red Wings were able to tie their game with 3 seconds remaining and then win the game in a shootout. However, with the Flyers game ending first, and at least in this lost, Flyers fans, can say that the Flyers ended the Pittsburgh Penguins season.
