NHL insider, Elliotte Friedman is reporting the Flyers are close to locking up two way defenseman, Travis Sanheim to an extension. Friedman reports it is a long term deal in the $6m range; similar to that of Mackenzie Weegar in Calgary.

Sanheim has steadily improved in the defensive zone and is a capable, two way D. Sanheim isn't afraid to take the man and can make clean exit passes out of the zone, alleviate pressure and utilize open ice with his smooth skating, and has a deceptively strong shot.
In Tortorella's aggressive system, that will encourage his defense to pinch and hold the zone, read the rush and jump when the opportunity is there, and play a more aggressive style, Sanheim could see his best season yet.

Sanheim is a unrestricted free agent after this season, and fans feared he may choose elsewhere as the Flyers are not planned to be in a winning atmosphere anytime soon, Sanheim has the option to talk to all 32 teams if the Flyers do not re-sign him.

Chuck Fletcher would be wise to sign Sanheim to an extension before his value rises.
