Friday was a busy day for NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman who spent nearly an hour with the media at the All-Star game, going over a range of topics, as well as making groundbreaking announcements for the league. Along with the big announcement of the NHL returning its participation in the Olympics in 2026, Bettman also announced a new tournament in 2025 to replace the NHL All-Star game.

The NHL made a major announcement on Friday afternoon that in replacement of the All-Star game in 2025, the NHL will host an in-season tournament taking place in one Canadien city (Montreal) and one American city (Boston) named The Four Nations Face-Off

"The in-season 2025 NHL 4 Nations Face-Off will consist of a total of seven games played during a nine-day period from Feb. 12-20, along with two practice days, Feb. 10-11, and will be held in two yet-to-be named North American cities, one in Canada and one in the United States."

The four countries represented in the four nations face off consist of the United States, Canada, Sweden and Finland. Bettman referred to the in-season tournament as a sort of "appetizer" that will be a prequel to the upcoming Olympics in 2026.
